AH-64 Apache (Longbow)The Apache attack helicopter was designed with just one purpose. To be the most versatile and all conquering aerial warfare helicopter ever produced, and in my mind it has proven itself to be without challenge, though maybe the next helicopter up on my list might come close. (“The Black Shark” will be featured next time).Measuring up at 17.57m long with a main rotor diameter of just 14.63 m it still manages to top the scales with an all up weight of 7,746kg. That weight can be made up of a mixture of 16 x Hellfire Anti-Tank missiles or 76 x 2.75 CRV-7 rockets along with one thousand two hundred, 30 mm cannon rounds for the heads up display controlled chain gun, mounted just below the Co-Pilots seat. Or it can be kitted out with 4 air-to-air missiles Designed to be fully operational, even in adverse weather conditions, in any region of the World, from Afghanistan to the Artic, it’s twin Turbines (The British version is equipped with 850 shaft horse power Rolls-Royce RTM-322 engines) can be ready within minutes. It is complimented with some of the most sophisticated camera technology, these are composed of four high spec cameras giving all round zoom vision, with the addition of a Zoom Binocular vision system. Coupled with the two FLIR Infra-Red system cameras, and when fitted with the mast topped “Longbow” (LBA AH-64D) the Apache has become the eyes and ears of the battlefield. So much so that the US Army is planning to upgrade it’s entire fleet of Apaches to the Longbow configuration.
